around the city and the roads

I love these rock outcroppings all around the hills of the city.  This road side stand is selling Christmas decorations.

Yes vendors  are selling in and on the side of the street.  They walk among the cars as they drive by.  The man in a green outfit is selling a tea drink.  The man with goods on his head is selling his homemade food stuff and the other two men, one in dark pants and shirt and the one in a white t-shirt and dark pants are washing windshields as people wait for the light to change.

Sister Boss and Brittner (in the gray coat)
Sister Brittner was an amazing singer and an amazing missionary.
She more than any other missionary I have met yet was determined to speak Spanish.  She spoke it every chance she could the best she could.A beautiful tree in the Harold B Lee building.

The Torres family and us are the only residents of Dormitory A right now.  They are going to do some remodeling and then more missionaries will come in.  Before they remodel they are selling all the old mattresses and night stands and tables.  This was the mattress sale--open to the employees and church members.  A taxi drove off with 5 or 6 mattresses piled high on top of the car.

A beautiful bright orange sun setting before I could get a full picture of it.

We have a small China Town here in Mexico City with real Chinese people.  I think they came over long ago to be workers for the wealthy people in Spanish Colonial times

What an amazing day! Tijuana Temple Dedication

This morning after our Relief Society meeting I went to the gymnasium to help with the live broadcast of the Tijuana Temple dedication.  Right now the only place we have the capacity to seat everyone for a live broadcast is in the gymnasium.  We have about 300 missionaries here plus a lot of branch presidents and their wives and senior couples who all want to see the dedication.

While the gymnasium is a rather unusual extension of the temple; because the auditorium is being remolded it was the only place we had to fit everyone and still have technology to broadcast.  That meant the volleyball net had to get taken down and our Christmas project to make a thousand fleece blankets had to be transferred to another room.

I exercise in the fitness room and in the gym 6 days a week so I saw what the maintenance staff did to prepare the gym.  I saw many from the maintenance staff on Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning cleaning the gym.  They cleaned the floor with a high power water pressure machine.  They had all the bleachers pulled out and were wiping them down.  It made me wonder if we would be sitting on the bleachers.  Then they laid rolls of carpet down on the floor (covering up the cleaning they had just done on the floor). They set up chairs, which they had also cleaned outside earlier in the week with high pressure hoses, wiping them down after water pressuring they clean. They were cleaning the chairs in the cool of the morning (50 degrees) while it was still dark.  That was on about Tuesday. We didn't use the bleachers after all.  I guess they just wanted them clean as they were part of the gym and it was an extension of the temple.

They closed the accordion sliding doors on each side as we entered the gym to make it more private and put flowers in the entry way where games used to be.  They had put away the ping pong and Foosball games that were in the entry.  That's two ping pong tables and 4 Foosball game tables.

The missionaries were asked to arrive to the gym 30 to 45 minutes early.  After they entered they were asked to be perfectly quiet and just read the scriptures as they would when they  go to the temple.  We had to check their temple recommends for current dates and signatures.  If they forgot their recommend they had to walk back to their casa and get it.  If they didn't bring one with them on their mission they had to get a new one from President Tenerio or get a permit ticket saying they were worthy to enter the temple.

The dedication was very special and at the end when we all sang The Spirit of God Like a Fire is Burning it was hard to control our emotions.  Elder Oaks and Elder Ucthdorf were at the Tijuana Temple and spoke. Elder Paul Piper from the First Quorum of Seventy who lives here in Mexico City led us in the Hosanna shout.  We, the senior missionaries, had handed out clean new white handkerchiefs to all the missionaries if they didn't already have one.

As we sang the closing song The Spirit of God) and during the first half of the closing prayer an amazing thing happened in the gymnasium. Where it had been calm all morning a dramatic sudden wind began to blow.  It blew the heavy black curtains that cover the high vaulted cathedral windows of the gym.  The windows go up to the top of the slanted ceiling. This was not just a mild wind but a sudden onset wind that blew up the heavy curtains and let in a lot a light. It blew so hard that it opened the curtains from one end until they were nearly a quarter of the way open (and then amazingly the wind seemed to close the curtains again after a while).  It fluttered the very large vent on the wall in front of me that was probably 4 feet by 4 feet square.  I could see inside the slates of the square vent.  There was a round outside vent inside the square vent that was probably also 4 feet in diameter.  The slats would blow and flutter and light up with the incoming sunlight so I could see the round air vent inside the square vent panels.  It was amazing to watch the effects of the wind and the light that was being shown in on us. Right after the temple dedication we exited the gym and all walked to the comedor for lunch and there was no wind.

There is no doubt in my mind that this was a might rushing wind like the one that the saints heard when the Kirtland Temple was dedicated.  We did not have people speak in tongues or see angels but there was definitely a noise which was a mighty rushing wind which filled the gymnasium to the point that I found it hard to pay attention or listen and not be too consumed with what was going on with the wind and the light that was entering the gym.

When I was taking Hebrew language classes from Diana Webb I learned that the word for spirit or the Spirit of God is "ruach". That is the same word in Hebrew for wind.

From church history comes this account of the Kirtland Temple dedication:
Joseph recalled that during the dedication, "George A. Smith arose and began to prophesy, when a noise was heard like the sound of a rushing mighty wind, which filled the Temple, and all the congregation simultaneously arose, being moved upon by an invisible power; many began to speak in tongues and prophesy; others saw glorious visions; and I beheld the Temple was filled with angels, which fact I declared to the congregation. The people of the neighborhood came running together (hearing an unusual sound within, and seeing a bright light like a pillar of fire resting upon the Temple), and were astonished at what was taking place." (History of the Church, 2:428.)

All of this says to me that the Lord accepted our humble gymnasium as an extension of the temple. Those humble maintenance workers had worked and prepared the gym the best they could and the Lord accepted it and allowed us to see his power and to feel his spirit

It will be difficult not to think about it each morning as I go in to exercise.  I don't know if it will ever just be a plain old gym again.  This CCM has been dedicated to the Lord for sacred purposes and a temple dedication is certainly one of those purposes.

This also tells me how our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ feel about temples.  They are why we are here.  It is so important to make sacred covenants in the temple.  It is vital to our exaltation.  If we want to be together with our families for eternity we must be sealed together in temples.  This is why the church builds and has built nearly 150 temples.  This will be be the work of the Millennium.  I thank my Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ for -- temple work-- to seal families together and perform temple ordinances for people who did not have a chance to make covenants with the Lord on their own while they were alive.

I thank my Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ for the spiritual manifestations of their presence today. It seems to say to me that our humble worship at a temple dedication is acceptable to God and this as opposed to all the millions of people trying to worship here now in Mexico

I am going to be very bold and contrast our amazing temple dedication in the gymnasium to what is happening in Mexico right now.  Yesterday was the culminating day to celebrate the Virgin Mary here  at the Catholic Basilica. (The Basilica is not too far from the CCM and the Mexico City Temple.  In fact it is probably about half way between the CCM and the temple)

We have been seeing pilgrimages for weeks and hearing the fireworks, guns being fired and cannons going off all night long especially Friday night (all night) Saturday, Saturday night and now still today on Sunday.  It is amazing.  They do it out of respect and to honor the Virgin, their patron Saint of Mexico.  The music and parties went on all day and all night. (to the point that I could not sleep)  All of this is to show their respect to the Virgin Mary the mother of Christ.

They are missing the point. They are misdirected in their worship.  They are led by false traditions.   They seem to be devout but are they really recognizing Jesus Christ as their savior and honoring him.

This is a news article from the internet about what is going on in Mexico right now.

Thousands and thousands of pilgrims crowd Mexico City basilica to honor Virgin of Guadalupe
Men, women and children are flooding into the area around Mexico City's basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the country's patron saint.
Faithful from across Mexico and from other nations have been arriving at the basilica all week for the annual celebration. But the biggest crowd was Saturday, the saint's day of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
City officials estimate more than 5.5 million pilgrims already visited the basilica this week and hordes are still coming.
People young and old, able bodied and not, often walk or roll in wheelchairs many miles (kilometers) to get to the basilica to fulfill a pledge or a penance. Some creep along on their knees.
Thousands camped out on the huge plaza at the basilica complex Friday night to be there for Saturday's Mass.

Pilgrimage to the Bascilica

Every time we go out now we see parades of people headed to the Basilica.  They usually have vehicles decorated balloons, flowers and crepe paper. December 12 it is the "Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe" and the basilica is named after her.

Public celebrations and fiestas are held in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe on December 12. Catholics all over Mexico and even other countries come to see an image of the Virgin Mary (that they believe is real) in the Basilica of Guadalupe.  On December 12 a million people are expected to be at the Basilica

Some times we see just parades or groups of people all dressed in the same color and carrying balloons, flowers or banners.
A photo taken from the front seat of our car.
This truck is part of a pilgrimage parade headed to the bascilica

These are just two of 50 or so big trucks with people that have arrived from far places and are living in their trucks during this pilgrimage time.  The street is packed with one truck after another.  They are are parked in sort of a middle lane in between the other lanes.  The truck below had a picture of the Virgin of Guadalupe on it.

52 North American missionaries left last night

Wow! We had three devotionals yesterday on the Sabbath.  Plus RS, Priesthood meeting, sacrament meeting and district meetings.  I am in charge of getting special musical numbers.  (At least I help with the process.)  The missionaries come to me for violins, music and to sign up.   Dennis and I listen to their audition and OK it and sign them up. (or not).  It has to be sung in Spanish and it has to be a hymn or a primary song.  Yesterday we had two special numbers.  One was at the 2:00 devotional and the other at the 4:30 devotional.  We had to listen to the one audition on two different days because both groups wanted to sing the same song so I asked the second group to go back and choose a different number.  They were both amazing.

The CCM has started a pilot program to speed up the Spanish learning.  The group that came in 10 days ago were given 100 words to learn in one week and then the next week more words and scriptures and phrases. They are told to only speak Spanish and to sit with the Latinos at lunch.  It is a complete Spanish immersion by their teachers.  They are already weeks ahead of the other missionaries.

We will have 52 missionaries leave today and tomorrow.  They have been trained and are ready to go to their assigned missions.  Last night we had a testimony meeting and 35 or so of them have a chance to share their feeling about the church and Jesus Christ.  They are ready and excited to go. They have firm testimonies about the truth of the gospel and want to share their convictions with others.

We also had about 80 Latino missionaries leave today as well.  I just don't have as much to do with the Latinos. It is amazing to see them leave and more just keep coming.  Our census has dropped a little during the holidays.  I am sure more will come at the first of the year.

Christmas time at the temple

Dennis had a meeting at the temple clinic on Saturday and he asked me to go with him.  I had not been to the temple on Saturday and was absolutely impressed by the number of families and saints that I saw there just enjoying the beauty of the day.
There were bus loads of people.  In one of the parking lots there were about 20 buses.  I guess wards hire a bus to take all who want to go.  Many people were walking around, others were eating lunch on the grounds and in an outdoor eating area and many must have been in the temple because the parking lot and bus lots were full. (Not all saints here have cars.  They depend on buses)

I hope poinsettias are not expensive here because I have never seen so many in one city.

The nativity scene is all white and accented beautifully against the green lawn and red poinsettias.
Other parts of the city also are extravagantly arrayed with hundreds and thousands of poinsettias.  Some avenues and streets also have as many as the temple grounds. They are planted in the island between the two lanes of traffic.  The CCM also has thousands in every bed and every building.  Dennis and I have them on our office desks as well.

Christmas decorations

Blanca is one of the employees that works very hard here.
This tree is in the reception/Joseph Smith building.

I was given the task of putting up decorations in the Thomas S. Monson building.  These elders came for a hour on their service time to help with the tree and the wall trimmings.

Missionary worries

There is always someone new to worry about here.  Elder Atkin arrived last Wednesday and right away got sick with a headache, fever and sore throat.  That developed into blisters on his hands, feet and arms.  His throat was so sore that he couldn't swallow or eat.  Dennis finally started an IV to replace fluids and gave him an antibiotic. With blisters on his hands he couldn't even put on his own name badge.  Thank goodness for good companions.  Last night he finally went to the emergency room to see if they would diagnose anything different than Dennis had already done.  While he was gone Dennis called his parents (his mother is secretary to Elder Holland) and he learned that all of his nieces and nephews who gave him hugs and kisses just before he left had come down with hand, foot and mouth disease the next day. That was what Dennis had diagnosed. The elder was highly contagious which bothers me a little because I had him in my office and in the back room.  Yesterday I asked if there was anything he wanted to eat and he suggested some soup, like a broth.  I went home and opened a can of chicken and rice soup, heated it up and brought it over to him.  I hope I washed the soup mug well enough.  The poor guy ate the whole serving with soggy crackers in it.  I imagine he was starving.  I also prepared some diced canned peaches for him.  At the service activity later in the day he was not able to hold a pair of scissors because his hands with blisters hurt so much.   Hopefully no one else gets hand foot and mouth disease. We are a small community here.

Then there was the Latina Hermana yesterday.  She had also been here for week, but had severe headache, nausea, couldn't walk well and had other symptoms.  She is from a poor community just a hour outside of Mexico City.  She was cleared to serve a mission despite the fact that she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. (maybe they thought it was inactive or benign)  It obviously got worse to the point where it is affecting her performance as a missionary.  The church will cover her with insurance for 90 days.  Her whole district was in the lobby of the clinic yesterday.  Her companion was holding her up and supporting her as she went into the bathroom to throw-up.  It was a very sad situation.  When her parents arrived the whole district went into the other room and sang a parting hymn before her parents took her to an apartment near the hospital where she will receive care.  The hymn they sang was Come, Come Ye Saints.  It was pretty sad when they got to the line that says, "And should we die before our journey is over, happy day all is well."   Her father shook my hand and thanked me. He doesn't know that I was not involved, but only wished that I could help.  Her mother supported her with her with a hand around her waist as they all walked out. We can only hope and pray that doctors will be able to help her.

Last night amid all this confusion in the lobby I was out for an errand when I came back in two North Americans were walking out.  I waved and said hola.  They came over to me and one asked how much it would cost for her to have an injection in her toe and to have the doctor work on her ingrown toenail.  I guess Dennis gives them a health class the first Monday they are here and mentions that is something he can do to help missionaries with ingrown toenails. She leaves on Monday and needed to get this taken care of right away.  I told her that there is no charge.  We take care of all the missionaries and their needs.  She had time right then so I found Dennis and he performed the little procedure for her.  Her companion and I tried our best to distract her as she didn't like the thought of having a shot in here toe.  I don't blame her.  I was just surprised that she thought there was a charge for missionaries here to be seen by a doctor. I am glad we can help even though Dennis does the biggest job of helping and I only assist him with putting ointment on the q-tip and opening the gauze package.  (the nurse had left for the day.)

Later we went to the devotional.  Dennis led the CCM Choir and I run around making sure all the people I asked to play the piano, pray and lead the music are in the right place and remember that I have asked them.  It is only a little tricky when the president asked me to have them all sing some songs NOW because there is a little too much talking going on and he would like a little more reverence.  I find myself announcing to the congregation that we will sing some Christmas hymns. (half of them speak Spanish and I can't say that in Spanish).  So it gets a chuckle from all the missionaries and I promise myself that I will learn how to speak better Spanish) Life here is just one embarrassing moment after another.

blanket project

We are making blankets as a service project.  This was huge pile of fleece.  It is getting made into blankets by the missionaries

We cut the edges and tie them in knots.

around the campus

Tuesday is always Costco pizza night.  They only delivered 80 this time since the CCM census is low.  We have about 350-400 people right now.  I love the fresh spinach and lettuce from Costco.  I can trust it to be clean and safe to eat.
